6 Month Review

We have been cloth diapering Noah almost exclusively for the past 6 months. It has been a fun learning experience. Whether it's cleaning nasty poopy diapers, figuring out which inserts to use, or picking out what color diaper to wear for the next 2 hours, it's been fun. We started out with just bumGenius 4.0 diapers, now we added in 2 Softbums diapers, 1 Rumparooz diaper, 1 bumGenius Freetime diaper, 2 Sloomb overnight bamboo fleece fitted diapers (OBFs) and 1 Thirsties diaper cover.

BumGenius (BG) 4.0's are still my favorite. I'm so glad I picked these out to be the majority of my stash! I have 18 of them. They are great. They have a big opening to stuff with and the fit is great. They are 1 sized with 3 levels of snaps for sizing. (8-35lbs) I've heard they don't really get a great fit until baby is around 10lbs. Right now I have Noah on the middle level at 14 months so he still has room to grow in them until he potty trains. I'm hoping to have him potty trained this coming summer/fall. They come in fun color and patterns and the snaps are very sturdy. They did come with microfiber inserts but I found that as he started drinking water this summer in addition to nursing, the inserts were not holding enough. So I ordered some Grovia bamboo prefolds (9 of them) and Babykicks hemp inserts to try out. These did the trick!! I love love the prefolds, they are super soft and work great in the pockets. Prefolds can be either be folded on baby or pinned, lay flat in a cover or stuffed in a pocket diaper. Click here for a little "how to." The hemp inserts, I pair with one of the microfiber inserts that came with the diapers. Hemp although very absorbent, it takes a little while to actually absorb so putting a microfiber insert on top can be very helpful.

While we are on the topic of bumGenius, we can talk about the Freetime diaper. This one is my least favorite out of my diapers. It’s an all-in-one diaper so there is no stuffing at all. Just wash, dry and you're good to go. For this reason, a lot of moms and dads like these types of diapers. I have found that Noah pees way too much for this diaper. It's not absorbent enough for him. I have tried to put an extra insert with it but it just doesn't fit right and not very accommodating to do so. It’s also a pain in the butt to get out poop. Needless to say, I will be sticking with my pocket diapers.

My Softbums diapers are just that, super soft! They are also 1 sized but instead of the snaps for sizing, it has a draw string. So many moms rave about these diapers so I really wanted to try it out for myself. They apparently fit newborns really well although I haven't tried. The draw string adjustment took some getting used to but we have finally figured it out. You can either use these as a pocket diaper or it does have a snap for the inserts so that they just lay inside the diaper. This way, you can use the shell again by simply taking out the insert and snapping another one in. I found that because Noah is a boy and only pees in the front that this didn't work for us because it would bunch up in the front and he would leak. So we use it as a pocket diaper. I have 1 bamboo soaker that I pair with a BG microfiber insert and 1 microfiber/microfleece soaker that I pair with hemp. These diapers are a little pricy at $21.95 for just the shell and the inserts at around $15 which is why I only have 2. I actually bought just 1 and then got the other one free at Kelly's Closet or KC. KC always has a free diaper coupon if you spend so much, free shipping over $49 and points for every purchase that goes towards a gift card. It's my favorite place to buy now because of the deals.

Another diaper that I saw a lot of moms talk about was Rumparooz. I'm still undecided on this diaper. I don't hate it but I don't love it either. This is also a 1 sized diaper and is another diaper that is supposed to fit newborns really well. These diapers have an extra row of snaps for sizing so they can get really small. I have noticed that because of this, the diaper runs smaller than my others. Noah is already on the biggest setting. This diaper comes with 2 microfiber inserts and I use both for Noah. It has a nice size opening to stuff with but it’s very open. Apparently it closes when you snap the diaper shut but I'm paranoid and always put a microfleece liner over it. If you don't know, microfiber is very good at taking moisture away and is not to touch baby's skin. It will leave baby very dry and actually make the bleed so for Noah's safety I use the liner.

Hope you're still with me, now we are going to talk about my nighttime solution. I was using one of BG pockets stuffed with a bamboo prefold and large microfiber insert then we started leaking...So I started researching and asking my cloth diaper support group what they use for their babies at night. A lot of them said OBF's so I just had to try. They are pricy at almost $25 a piece but I figured if it means no leaks we'll try them. So I bought 2 so that I would have enough between laundry days. I do diaper laundry every day and a half. So they are bamboo fitted diapers which mean the whole diaper is absorbent so you do have to pair with a diaper cover. That's where the Thirsties cover comes in. These fitted diapers come with a snap in double insert and then an extra one for ultimate absorption. These diapers are well worth the money! The whole is soaked in the morning but no leaks! Yay!!

So there you have it, my review of my fluff. :) I should add that cloth diapering is very addicting!! I look the KC at least once a day. I just window shop which almost fills the void.
